Body Contouring Surgery for Patients After Significant Weight Loss

Surgery After Weight Loss

Losing a significant amount of weight — whether through diet and exercise, bariatric surgery, or GLP-1 medications — is a remarkable achievement. But dramatic weight loss often leaves behind loose, excess skin that diet and exercise alone cannot address. Body contouring surgery removes that excess skin and reshapes the body underneath, completing the transformation you worked so hard to start.

Dr. Steven Clark, M.D., D.M.D., FACS, has extensive experience helping post-weight-loss patients achieve the body they worked toward. With over 25 years of surgical expertise, he develops personalized surgical plans that address each patient's unique anatomy, goals, and recovery capacity.

Am I a Good Candidate?

The best candidates for post-weight-loss body contouring have:

  • Stable weight for at least 6–12 months
  • Non-smoking or committed to stopping before surgery
  • Realistic expectations about outcomes
  • Good overall health without uncontrolled conditions
  • Adequate nutritional status (especially post-bariatric patients)
  • Commitment to maintaining weight after surgery

It's important that your weight be stable before surgery. Continued weight loss or regain after contouring procedures can affect results significantly. Dr. Clark will evaluate your readiness during your consultation and advise on the right timing.

What to Expect

Consultation

Dr. Clark will evaluate your anatomy, review your weight loss history, and discuss which procedures are appropriate and in what sequence. Many patients benefit from a staged approach — undergoing procedures in separate operations to allow full recovery between them.

Surgery

Procedures are performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient or short-stay surgical setting. Duration varies depending on the number of areas being treated. Dr. Clark will provide a detailed surgical plan before you proceed.

Recovery

Most patients take two to four weeks off after major contouring procedures. Compression garments are worn during healing to support the tissues and reduce swelling. Full results are typically visible three to six months after surgery, once swelling has completely resolved.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I wait after weight loss before having surgery?

Most surgeons recommend waiting until your weight has been stable for at least six to twelve months. If you've had bariatric surgery, your nutritional status and healing capacity should also be evaluated before proceeding.

Can all the procedures be done at once?

Some procedures can be safely combined in a single operation, but major combined surgeries carry increased risk. Dr. Clark will advise on what can be done together and what should be staged. Patient safety always guides the plan.

Will insurance cover body contouring after weight loss?

Most body contouring procedures are considered cosmetic and are not covered by insurance. However, a panniculectomy (surgical removal of a hanging abdominal skin panel) may be covered if it causes documented medical problems such as recurrent infections or skin breakdown. Our team can assist with documentation as needed.
